Text chat with strangers gets underrated. You do not have to fix your hair, find good light or worry about who else is in the room. Every reply can wait a beat while you think it through, and the other side enjoys the same breathing room. For a lot of CamDiv members that is exactly why the text mode is the one they open most nights.
Set the start screen to text, hit start, and a random stranger appears in a thread only the two of you can see. Nothing switches on your camera or microphone in this mode. If the first few lines go nowhere, tap next and somebody else arrives.

Random matching means the person on the other side might live in Lima, Manila or Kyiv, and their English might be patchy. On CamDiv, typed messages come with a translate button. Tap it under a line you cannot read and it shows up in your language. Your match can do the same with yours.
Machine translation is not perfect. Jokes lose their timing and slang sometimes comes out sideways. It is still far better than a polite goodbye after three words, and plenty of people use it on purpose to practice: type in the language you are studying, check the translation only when stuck, and invite your match to fix your mistakes.

Who you are typing to
When a text match connects, a card at the top shows the other person’s nickname, age, country and language. It is enough to start with something better than hi, and not enough to find anyone in the real world. Yours shows the same handful of details.
The privacy that makes text chat comfortable is also something to protect. Keep your surname, your school or workplace and your social accounts out of early conversations. Some text chats run out after a minute. Others click so well that hearing the person’s voice starts to sound tempting. The mode is picked before each match, so when you are in the mood to hear a voice, return to the start screen and choose voice chat; when you want faces, choose video chat.
When a specific person is worth another conversation, sign in and follow each other. Followers can message one another later, so a good conversation does not disappear when somebody taps next.
